Adult First Aid Course
Description of skills
Adult First Aid (AFA) is a one day non-wilderness first aid course that trains participants in first aid basics for the most common first aid emergencies, including how to recognize them, how to call for help, and how to perform lifesaving skills. Adult First Aid is intended for activities where emergency services are available within minutes to about an hour.
The course uses the standards defined by AHA/Red Cross Guidelines for First Aid, which is jointly owned by the American Heart Association (AHA) and the American Red Cross.
The Adult First Aid badge does not include CPR. Classes that teach both Adult First Aid and CPR should also award the appropriate CPR course badge.
what does this badge allow me to do?
Fulfill the first aid requirement for some Mountaineers courses and leadership roles.
HOW DO I GET THIS BADGE?
courses
Complete our Adult First Aid course. The independent AFA certification that comes with the course expires after two years, but the Mountaineers course badge is good for three years, thereby offering an additional grace year for the purposes of completing a course or leadership requirement within the Mountaineers organization.
equivalency
The Adult First Aid course badge may be granted to members who have a current AFA certification from classes outside the Mountaineers that satisfy the AHA/Red Cross standard. Examples include the American Heart Association "Heartsaver First Aid" course or the American Red Cross "Adult First Aid" course.
Mountaineers volunteers and staff are not medical professionals, and are not trained or authorized to evaluate medical skills. We are able to award the badge via equivalency only if you have equivalent credentials.
