Snowshoeing Equivalency Application

Click here if you have sufficient skill and experience with snowshoeing such that you may be eligible for an equivalency badge. This would grant you the ability to register for trips with us without taking a Mountaineers course. If you are sure you can be a contributing member of a group of snowshoers, including assisting with incidents, fill out this application and the relevant committee will review it and contact you.

Basic Snowshoeing Course

Thank you for expressing your interest in getting out on the snow with The Mountaineers! To do so requires either that you successfully complete the snowshoeing course (normally held by branches in the late fall/winter so that trips can be taken while there's snow) or show that you have the equivalent skills, knowledge, and equipment that we expect of one of our Basic Snowshoeing Course graduates. This application describes and starts the process of determining course equivalency.

This application starts the necessary conversation between you and our volunteers. There may be slightly different requirements for the committees at different branches (all of which will comply with our organizational minimum standards for snowshoeing).

Are you a current Mountaineers member? This is not a requirement at this point, but may help the equivalency evaluator assess your level of comfort on outdoor experiences. Basic Snowshoeing Intermediate Snowshoeing

Mountaineers Instruction Please list the dates (month and year) and names of any Mountaineers courses or seminars that you have taken.

Mountaineering Experience on Snow Tell us a little about your experience traveling on snow. Please describe the location and length of at least three trips in which you have participated - with at least one having been in the last year. We want to know about snowshoeing of course, but we are also interested in knowing whether you've done any scrambling, climbing, backcountry skiing, etc.

Other Outdoor Skills Training Have you received training in any other outdoor skills that would be relevant to taking groups of people into the wilderness? If so, please tell us about it!

Avalanche Awareness Training Have you taken an Northwest Avalanche Center (or equivalent) Avalanche Awareness seminar? If applicable, please provide date and location.
