Fastpacking Trail Running Course
DESCRIPTION OF SKILLS
The holder of this badge has successfully completed our Introduction to Trail Running: Fastpacking course and/or has demonstrated proficiency in the following skills:
Fundamentals:
- Know how to choose appropriate lightweight gear and provisions for an overnight backcountry stay.
- Determine personal balance among safety, comfort while running, and comfort in camp.
Trip Planning:
- Know how to plan the type of overnight trip that suits your style, experience, and conditioning, and determine and follow the rules of the land manager
- Choosing a combination of lightweight equipment and clothing which matches expected weather, anticipated route, and terrain conditions
- Create an initial pack weight profile and determine where additional weight could be reduced
- Choosing nutritionally sound and calorie-dense food and menu planning
- Cooking and food preparation methods
- Understanding food storage techniques
- Choosing a water purification method
- Choosing a sleep system including shelter and insulation
- Demonstrated overnight backcountry camping proficiency
- Demonstrated ability to run a minimum 6 miles one-way with full pack
- Emergency preparedness (how to summon help should it be needed)
Etiquette & Low-Impact Recreation:
- Demonstrate awareness of proper trail and camp behavior, and follow Leave No Trace principles in planning and executing a trip including campsite selection; food, waste and gray water management; interactions with wildlife and with other wilderness visitors.
WHAT DOES THIS BADGE ALLOW ME TO DO?
This badge enables the holder to participate as a group member on Mountaineers fastpacking trail running overnight trips.
HOW DO I GET THIS BADGE?
COURSE
An individual receives this badge via the successful completion and graduation from the Introduction to Fastpacking: Trail Running Course.
EQUIVALENCY
The Fastpacking Trail Running Course Badge may be granted to members who have relevant experience and can demonstrate proficiency in most of the above skills in addition to the Backcountry Course badge. To connect with an equivalency coordinator at your branch, contact Member Services.
