Following Alpine Rock Course

This badge represents successful completion of the Following Alpine Rock Course. This course prepares students for following a trad leader in an alpine multi pitch rock climbing environment. This course combined with the glacier travel course and alpine scramble course is equivalent to taking the Basic Alpine Climbing Course.

DESCRIPTION OF SKILLS

The holder of this badge has demonstrated proficiency in the following skills:

  • Basic knots for rock climbing
  • Lead belaying
  • Munter belay
  • Belay Escape
  • Rappelling (extended, non-extended, lost belay device, firefighters belay,
    leg wrap, low anchor edge transitions, with pack)
  • Rappel safety (stopper knots, autoblock, test before trusting)
  • Multipitch voice commands
  • Cleaning and racking traditional protection placed by the leader
  • Assisting with transitions at belay stations
  • Fixed line travel
  • Ascending a rope
  • Rope coiling

WHAT DOES THIS BADGE ALLOW ME TO DO?

Those who hold this badge can participate in basic alpine or basic rock climbs. Learn more about these kinds of trips in the activity overview or search for upcoming activities. This badge plus the scramble badge and glacier travel badge result in basic alpine climbing equivalency. 

How do I get this badge?

Enroll in the Following Alpine Rock course held by the Seattle branch in the spring. This course is a pilot course and there is currently no equivalency process.
