Backcountry Ski Leader
DESCRIPTION OF SKILLS
The holder of this badge has participated in Mountaineers (or equivalent) training and demonstrated sound judgment, strong leadership skills, and technical proficiency in backcountry skiing activities, per the following requirements:
- A member of The Mountaineers in good standing, and at least 18 years of age.
- Approved by their Skiing Committee to lead backcountry ski trips. Restrictions regarding the types of trips led are at the discretion of the respective Skiing Committee.
- A MOFA or WFA graduate.
- Attended an Leadership Seminar within two years of becoming a leader. (Each branch's Skiing Committee defines a list of activities that meet the requirement of a Leadership Seminar. Examples might include the Outdoor Leadership Seminar or attendance at the Leadership Conference.)
- Successfully participated as an assistant leader on at least two backcountry trips offered by The Mountaineers.
- A graduate of the Backcountry Course, or recipient of Backcountry Course equivalency.
- Successful completion of AIARE Level 1 training.
WHAT DOES THIS BADGE ALLOW ME TO DO?
This badge allows you to lead backcountry ski trips for The Mountaineers consistent with your skills and training.
Requirements for continued participation as a backcountry ski leader:
- A member of The Mountaineers in good standing.
- Update skills every five years to maintain familiarity with current techniques.
- Lead at least one ski trip every consecutive three year period from the date of initial approval as a backcountry ski leader. The ski trip must be sponsored by a Skiing Committee.
- Approved by their Skiing Committee to continue to lead ski trips.
HOW DO I GET THIS BADGE?
To get this badge you must receive approval from your branch's Ski Committee, per the description of skills outlined above. Please contact your Ski Committee to begin the leader application process!
