Urban Walk Leader
The Urban Walk Leader badge authorizes the holder to lead Urban Walks for The Mountaineers as defined in the Hike/Urban Walk/Backpack standard.
DESCRIPTION OF SKILLS
The holder of this badge has successfully completed Mountaineers (or equivalent) training and demonstrated sound judgment, strong leadership skills, and technical proficiency in the skills enumerated in Mountaineers Urban Walk Leader Competency Targets.
- Group leadership
- Technical skills and fitness
- Urban and suburban navigation including map, altimeter, compass and GPS tool use
- Urban and suburban safety including identification of hazards and actions to avoid injury
- First Aid and Emergency preparedness (how to summon help if needed)
- Knowledge of Standards and Policies
OTHER REQUIREMENTS
- Current American Red Cross First Aid/CPR training or mountaineering equivalent badge
- Current front country navigation or wilderness navigation badge
- Complete outdoor stewardship in past 12 months (optional by branch)
WHAT DOES THIS BADGE ALLOW ME TO DO?
This badge allows you to lead urban walks for The Mountaineers.
HOW DO I GET THIS BADGE?
- Complete at least three Mountaineers hikes, backpacks or urban walks (including a minimum of 1 urban walk).
- Complete a hike leader or urban walk seminar within past 12 months OR complete the Foundations of Leadership eLearning course
- Complete a Pedestrian Safety Seminar
- Successfully lead a mentored urban walk; and secure hiking committee approval
