Ambassadors-Hosted Trips
Alpine Ambassadors host mentored climbing trips for our climbing volunteers who seek to further develop their climbing skills and experience. Our Alpine Ambassadors have received training and mentorship from world class climbers and expert climbing guides, and are eager to share that expertise with other Mountaineers climbing volunteers. Volunteers who attend our Ambassadors-hosted trips will receive individualized mentorship to help them expand their skill set and achieve their personal climbing goals.
Ambassadors-hosted trips are offered at no cost to the volunteers who participate. The Mountaineers covers the costs of lodging for everyone, as well as the mentors' travel expenses. Volunteers who are accepted to an Ambassadors-hosted trip are responsible for their own travel and food costs, as well as any gear that cannot be borrowed.
Our Ambassadors-Hosted Trips have an application which is reviewed by the mentors leading the trip. The review team uses the following criteria and objectives to evaluate applicants:
- Applicants should have enough climbing experience that they will benefit from more advanced mentorship. Minimum climbing ability will be indicated with each trip
- Strong recent history of volunteerism in The Mountaineers
- While these trips are primarily designed for folks who are not Alpine Ambassadors, we may accept up to 30% current Ambassadors who are strong in one area but need more experience in another. At least 70% of the accepted participants will be from outside of Alpine Ambassadors.
- We strive for diversity in branch representation
- We strongly encourage women climbers, climbers of color, and LGBTQ climbers to apply, and we strive to grow a diverse community of motivated climbers
- Applicants who have applied more than once are given favorable consideration
BEFORE APPLYING
Our Ambassadors-hosted trips are typically small, with 4-8 spots available, so that we can provide a great experience for everyone. With many deserving Mountaineers climbing volunteers, we nearly always get more qualified applicants than we have space for, so many applicants need to apply three or four times before being accepted. Our goal is to make repeated applications easy for applicants. The following steps will set you up for easy future applications. Completing all of these steps before opening the online application will save you a lot of time in this application and in the future.
Applications will require a climbing resume and a Mountaineers volunteering resume. We recommend creating these as Google Docs (or other online word processing application) and keeping them updated on a regular basis. There will be a place in the application for you to hyperlink your resume(s). There will also be an option to upload them if you prefer.
- Climbing Resumes should be in reverse chronological order and focused on the most recent 3 years, but can include prior experience. Resumes should include climbs as well as courses taken. Resumes should include rock, ice and alpine, and should list grade and your role (leader, participant, etc).
- Volunteer Resumes should be focused on the most recent 3 years, but can include prior experience. Resumes should focus on volunteering within The Mountaineers, but can also include other volunteer work in the outdoor community.
